Service-Connected Disability Compensation (SCDC) is a tax-free monetary benefit collected by veterans suffering from a disability or illness that was either contracted or aggravated by a period of active military service.  It is not a loan or grant.  Veterans and their families can be eligible for thousands of dollars per month, depending on the severity of the disability.

Service-Connected Disabilities include injuries, whether they were sustained or worsened in combat. Service-Connected Disability Compensation covers conditions such as back or knee injuries to a diagnosis of cancer and other diseases while in active service. You may even have a claim if an underlying condition such as reflux or a heart condition is aggravated by active duty related stress. Consequently, disabling conditions resulting from exposure to Agent Orange, radiation and other toxic substances or psychological and emotional distress after serving in an active theater can result in a covered claim.

Compensation is most often received in the form of monthly payments. However, veterans may be entitled to other types of benefits. For example, veterans who require modified housing or clothing due to loss of limb(s) may be eligible for supplemental grants. Other programs also offer allowance for automobiles and in-home medical care.
